What is the difference between an opt-out and a blacklist entry or a complaint?

What is a Complaint?

A complaint is initiated by a subscriber. If a subscriber files a complaint and the respective provider forwards it to MAILINGWORK, the subscriber will be permanently excluded from all future mailings. If they later decide to resubscribe to the newsletter, this will no longer be possible. The number of times their email address appears in your subscriber lists does not matter, as the entire email address will be blocked for future mailings in case of a complaint. For data protection reasons, entries on the complaint list cannot be viewed or removed.

What is a Blacklist?

You can manually add entries to a blacklist, for instance, to exclude subscribers you no longer wish to contact. Once a subscriber is added to the blacklist, it does not matter how many times their address appears in different subscriber lists; they will no longer receive emails.

What is an Unsubscription?

An unsubscription refers to the revocation of consent by a subscriber to receive emails. The subscriber clicks the unsubscribe link in your mailing to initiate the process. This action automatically removes the subscriber from the relevant list in MAILINGWORK, ensuring they will not receive future emails. Additionally, the email address is added to the unsubscription list linked to each subscriber list, preventing re-subscription or re-import unless explicitly allowed in the setup.

Differences between Unsubscriptions, Blacklists, and Complaints

  • An unsubscription occurs when a subscriber actively revokes their consent to receive your newsletter, typically via an unsubscribe link in your newsletter.
  • A blacklist entry is manually added by you to exclude certain email addresses from future mailings.
  • A complaint happens when a subscriber marks your newsletter as SPAM or files a complaint with their email provider regarding its content.
